ECONP_002. GDP as a measure of Economic System Health: Growth

Today, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is seen as the primary measurement of economic activity. There is an expectation that this number will grow and provide benefits to the owners and consumers.

In this system description, GDP is shown as a systemic property and is created through the interaction of the Human Activity Systems and the Human Activity Infrastructure Systems. If there is a disruption to any of the systems (e.g. Covid19, Banking failures, etc) the GDP may drop. Recovery from these disruptions may actually amplify the GDP value. A single measure does not define a safe and just space for humanity.
